Across the southwestern United States, a low-pressure system and a strong jet stream brought overnight storms, especially affecting Arizona and New Mexico. Satellite and surface gauge data show abundant moisture in the region, fueling showers and thunderstorms, particularly around Tucson, where heavy rain is expected, but severe weather is unlikely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the heaviest rainfall is forecast from Tucson north to Pinal County from 11 am onward, with more storms developing in neighboring counties moving southwest, with additional storms in central New Mexico later today. Storm activity will decrease tomorrow, with only isolated strong storms in northeast New Mexico, and precipitation is expected to taper off into Tuesday. By midweek, scattered thunderstorms will mainly affect mountainous areas, while temperatures in Tucson are forecast to stay below 100\u00b0F as a weaker monsoon pattern settles in, with the potential for storm activity to increase again by the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Yesterday&#8217;s Weather<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visible satellite imagery from 5 pm yesterday didn&#8217;t look threatening, but two small clusters of thunderstorms were about to change that. The first cluster (green) was pushing eastward from west of Wickenburg with the heaviest storms along the south side of the cluster. The cluster to the south (red) was moving northward and did produce a 58-mph wind gust at Gila Bend.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"702\" src=\"https:\/\/discussions.weather.arizona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-227-1024x702.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5018\" srcset=\"https:\/\/discussions.weather.arizona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-227-1024x702.png 1024w, https:\/\/discussions.weather.arizona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-227-300x206.png 300w, https:\/\/discussions.weather.arizona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-227-768x527.png 768w, https:\/\/discussions.weather.arizona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-227.png 1206w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">GOES-19 visible satellite image from August 31st at 5:00 pm, College of DuPage.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By 9 pm the two clusters were merging near Phoenix. These storms produced heavy rain, with many locations recording over an inch, especially in the foothills from Wickenburg east to Cave Creek. There was blowing dust, and winds were below 50 mph.\u00a0Overnight, the storms built further south, extending to Tucson.\u00a0By 7\u00a0am, the radar shows storms redeveloping in Maricopa, Pinal, and Pima counties. These storms are not severe, but they will add to today&#8217;s rainfall totals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video height=\"822\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1686 \/ 822;\" width=\"1686\" autoplay controls loop muted src=\"https:\/\/discussions.weather.arizona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20260831-1614-07.2034656.mp4\" playsinline><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">12Z HRRR-UA WRF simulated radar reflectivity (left) and corresponding MRMS radar mosaic (right) from 4 pm yesterday to 8 am today<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The HRRR-UA WRF 12Z 24-hour accumulated precipitation forecast (left) and corresponding observed precipitation from MRMS (right) are shown below.\u00a0The forecast\u00a0was a little aggressive\u00a0with precipitation amounts. The heavier rain near the Mogollon Rim was on the south side of the Rim and not the north side.\u00a0\u00a0Heavier rain fell in Cochise and parts of Graham County and in western New Mexico\u00a0than was\u00a0forecast. The Brawley Wash rose 5 feet at three points. The first is in southern Canada\u00a0and the second in southwest Nevada. The second low and associated jet stream are responsible for the overnight storms. The Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) is still high at 800 [J\/kg] with only minor Convective Inhibition (CIN). The downward DCAPE of 811 [J\/kg] would indicate\u00a0wind gusts less than 30 mph. Except for heavy rain, thunderstorms show no other potential for severe weather. The sounding at San Simon\u00a0(right)\u00a0shows thunderstorm potential in the late afternoon.
